The most common brand that you’ve probably heard of is Fairlife. They tout higher protein and less sugar in their milk, but HOW? What makes it different from a regular gallon of milk?
The process of ultra filtration consists of using porous membranes to separate the components of milk. We are talking protein, lactose, and more. Then, the components are put back together with higher concentrations of protein and calcium and less sugar (lactose). Usually, ultra filtered milks are lactose free, so they don’t upset as many tummies. However, they are more expensive than your standard gallon because of the extra filtration, and it takes more fresh milk to make a gallon.
Check out these graphs to compare the nutritional value of Fairlife Whole Milk to regular Whole Milk. There are a lot of pros to the ultra filtered milk, but is the price worth it? Thats up to you to decide! I like to pick Fairlife milks when stopping at a convenience store and looking for a snack, but we don’t stock our fridge with it. Nobody has issues with lactose in our family and frankly, we go through SO much milk, the extra price just isn’t worth it. But man, it is tasty!
